As a coach with over 25 years’ experience helping businesses of all sizes in a variety of sectors, I speak from experience when I say that setting goals is a great way to clarify your business goals and increase the chance of achieving them. One goal setting method that has proven to be successful time and time again is the use of SMART goals. So, what are SMART goals and how can they help you make achievable objectives?
What is the SMART Goal Setting Method?
SMART is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Based goals, and in my opinion, is one of the most effective methods that you can employ to keep pushing your business forward. Here’s how each letter helps you to focus your efforts and achieve results.
Rather than making broad, wishy washy goals, yours need to be as specific as you can make them. Clear, concise, and with a distinct focus. For example, ask yourself what success looks like for you. What exactly do you want to accomplish? What steps do I need to take to achieve my goal?
To ensure they are measurable, SMART goals need to be quantifiable so that they can be tracked. Involving a percentage or a number is the best way to do this, for example: “get 5 new clients each month” or “increase the views on my website by 25%.”
Make sure your goals are truly within your reach. Good leaders know that employees are motivated by goals that stretch them, as long as they’re not unrealistic. Try to make sure you are ambitious as well as practical.
SMART goals need to be relevant to your business. Ensuring they are relevant makes it easier to create a unique set of objectives that really make sense for you and your business.
SMART goals should also have a specific time frame in mind. A time frame will not only help you to stay motivated, it will allow you to measure your success when you achieve that milestone.
